GIBBS HIGH SCHOOL
St. Petersburg, Florida

Located in South St. Petersburg, this historic high school is named after the first black Secretary of State of Florida, and Superintendent of Public School Instruction, Jonathan C. Gibbs. Gibbs High School has been a source of pride in this community and is significant to black historians and community leaders. This project is the culmination of years of planning and when complete will be the largest project ever conceived by the Pinellas County School board. Currently the following magnet programs are offered; Pinellas County Centers for the Arts; and Business, Economic, Technology Academy. The predominant new buildings will be a two story Classroom / Administration / Media Center Building, two story Art and Music Building, existing two story Arts Building, Physical Education / ROTC Building, fully functioning Performing Arts Theater, and Cafeteria Building.

The new Classroom / Administration / Media Center Building will feature a “Hub” concept. The student lockers and bathrooms will be grouped into three Hub areas, and surrounded by Teacher Planning spaces thereby offering natural surveillance. These Hubs will be a major Architectural feature and will be visible and dominant from almost anywhere on the campus.

These new additions totaling 340,000 s.f. are due for completion by June 2005. The total construction cost is $41,000,000.
